Bentek Village, Gangga District, North Lombok, Indonesia.
Classroom of Hope Indonesia
Bentek 4 Primary School is located in the farming village of Lenek, a combined Muslim and Buddhist community in the Gangga district of North Lombok. Much of the village’s infrastructure, including its school, was destroyed in the earthquakes of 2018. The school’s six class groups and their teachers were using three classrooms built by the government and four temporary classrooms. As the temporary classrooms were constructed near a Buddhist temple about 200 meters from the school, teachers and students would move back and forth between the two locations throughout the day. This arrangement disrupted the processes of teaching and learning. Students and teachers also lacked clean toilet facilities causing hygiene and sanitation issues.
SDN 4 Bentek Block School consists of four fully furnished classrooms fitted with lights, fans, and power points and fully furnished with desks and chairs, whiteboards, a filing cabinet, and a storage cupboard. Four new Block Toilets have also been built at the school to ensure improved sanitation standards and prevent hygiene-related illnesses. This permanent structure provides a safe and motivating learning environment for the students and teachers. Parents will feel comfortable knowing that the Block School is earthquake-resistant, which will encourage them to allow their children to pursue education. The construction of the new building emphasises the importance of education to the whole community and provides an incentive for the children to complete their primary education.
