BACKGROUND

Selengen 2 Primary School is located Tampes, a fishing village in North Lombok, Indonesia. The 2018 Lombok earthquakes devastated the community, destroying all school buildings. Students initially studied in an emergency building provided by the government. In 2019, the school received five classrooms, a teachers’ room, and two teacher toilets from the central government. However, the space was still insufficient for the hundreds of students in ten study groups. Three groups studied in a semi-open building with unpolished brick walls, a zinc roof, weathered ceilings, and cement floors. The wooden partitions between classes were perforated. Two other groups were learning in an emergency tent that would flood during the rainy season and was unsafe for the children.

OUTCOMES

Classroom of Hope, in partnership with Happy Hearts Indonesia, has delivered five new Block classrooms and four Block toilets to SDN 2 Selengen. Constructed from recycled plastic and designed to be earthquake-resistant, these classrooms ensure longevity and come fully furnished with desks, chairs, whiteboards, and storage. They provide a safer and more durable learning environment, raising community awareness about student-friendly features. The new toilets offer clean, sanitary facilities and are equipped with hand washing stations to promote good hygiene. This initiative highlights the power of collective action, fostering a sustainable partnership among the school, local community, and government to create positive change.
