About SD 5 Malaka
SDN 5 Malaka is an elementary school for 1st to 6th-grade students located in the Batukliang Utara sub-district of Central Lombok. Before the earthquake of 2018, SDN 5 Malaka had six permanent classrooms and one teachers’ office. The school serves 187 students and employs ten teachers. The earthquakes severely damaged four of the classrooms at SDN 5 Malaka and caused less severe damage to the other two classrooms, however, all six classrooms were left in a state that was unsafe for learning. The Education Department of West Nusa Tenggara Province supported four temporary classrooms. The school was still in need of two more classrooms. For this reason, Pelita Foundation built two pop up classrooms at SDN 5 Malaka. The building process began on the 15th of February 2020 and was complete on the 28th of February 2020.
"For us at Pelita Foundation and for all the people of Lombok, pop up schools are like an oasis in the middle of a desert. A light of hope for the children and teachers of this island."
